Below are 5 home design trends that you must try! These are easy budget friendly ways to transform your space in little to no time.
While my word of the year is fearless, I think there is another word describing the year for many, and that’s HOPE! I think the 2021 home design trends center around the word hope. Hope to me represents a natural calm, determination to create and imagine and the culmination of all of that, the fulfillment of dreams!
Home Design Trend #1: Sky Blue!
A natural calm and clear mind takes me to the coast! Place me on a beach with some palm trees and the sounds of the waves crashing onto the sand! I think this ties in perfectly to the fact that the HGTV Dream Home 2021 is waterfront with a lot of coastal decor! (Pause for a moment and daydream about being announced as the winner of that house! *sigh*) With that in mind, it’s really no surprise that the design color of the year is Sky Blue! It’s my absolute favorite color, I am a Carolina grad after all, and to me, this is the easiest design trend I’ll ever come across. My eyes are naturally drawn to Carolina Blue… err Sky Blue! And I’ve never been more ready to walk into stores Iike HomeGoods/TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Target/Kirklands and see ALL. THE. BLUE! Did you know that Pantone Inc. chooses a color of the year every year? It’s a long standing tradition that influences fashion, home design trends and decor. 2020 was classic blue and 2019 was coral. Both colors that will bode well with our new inspiration color! In their description they discussed that the sky blue is more of a palette of blues and they look to the sky for inspiration and the different blues you will see throughout the day, from dusk to dawn!
Sky blue is a great pop of color when used in throw pillows or in art pieces/with shelving, but also comes across as more neutral and subtle when used with light wood tones and whites. My favorite color to pair sky blue with is navy! Swoon! Overall, all neutral rooms are out in 2021 and pops of color are in! YAY! I love everything about this! If you sway on the neutral decor side, sky blue will be a great way to move towards color and spice up your space while not being too drastic!
Home Design Trend #2: Cleanliness
Cleanliness will always be at the forefront of everyone’s minds! 2020 wasn’t that long ago and the pandemic is ongoing. Nothing makes me feel more calm than walking into a clean simple space! 2021 home design trends will bring out non-porous decor like glass and metal, textiles such as rugs and upholstery and other soft surfaces and fabrics that are designed to resist stains and that can be wiped down easily to prevent the spread of bacteria and germs! A clean simple space can promote tranquility and optimism. It also is a better work environment and can increase productivity and creativity! Start with a clean slate!
Home Design Trend #3: Shelving
Let me get a “shelfie!” Shelfies are one of the top home design trends! Scroll through instagram and pinterest and you will see post after post of well decorated shelving around the house. The shelving options are truly endless! Keep your shelving choices simple and fun! I love a simple floating shelf and this tic tac toe shelf that a friend made for us hit the mark and is a favorite decor piece in our house!
Tying into trends 1 and 2, and finding the perfect pieces for your shelves is important. Select meaningful home decor pieces to you and your family, such as photographs and family pieces. Don’t forget to add some color! I love grouping items in sets of 3. Pick items that are different heights and that are made of different materials to add dimension. These items will come together with a theme or a color pallet. Try different positions and play around with your decor! Take a step back, take a photo and examine that photo! And if all else fails, add that photo to IG stories with a poll and ask for help or suggestions!
Home Design Trend #4: Create a Functional Space
This should also come as no surprise this year. Creating spaces that are functional and can meet you and your family where you are at is crucial! With 2020 forcing people to work from home and with their loved ones close by, those 4 walls seem to be closing in on us! We spend a lot of time in our homes and our spaces need to adapt to our current needs! Are you and your loved one now sharing an office? It’s completely acceptable to revamp your spaces! This can be as simple as adding a screen between your work spaces to define areas and give you a little more privacy! Do you have a formal dining room? Think about ways to convert that space you only use a couple times a year to a space that will help your family stay sane! Take that laptop outside once the weather warms up and work from your back deck! In creating these functional spaces, you’ll find that you also see items around your house that no longer serve a purpose or that you just don’t love! Snap a few photos and list those items on Facebook marketplace or OfferUp! Get rid of the items that no longer bring you joy and make some extra money selling them! You and your home are adaptable and you’ll find that making changes towards a functional space will help decrease your stress!
Home Design Trend #5: DIY Projects
Last, but certainly not least, DIY projects! Home design trends are meant to be trial and error to a certain extent and this one is my favorite! All that time in your home over the past year has probably made you want to makeover many of your spaces! Are you finding that you need more storage, that on your 12th trip to the pantry that day that you still can’t find the snack item that you bought earlier this week, or that you can’t find anything quickly for that matter, or that you hate the color of your dining room, turned home office and you need to make a change NOW? This is the year where you have new hope for the future. You have time to scour the internet for inspiration and to tackle those those home DIY projects you’ve been dreaming about and putting off for the future! One project that gets the best bang for your buck is a can of paint and some time! Paint those walls in your dining room a color that makes you happy to work in that space! You’ll have a new space in less than a day! I recommend grabbing a higher quality paint. There are several that advertise only needing one coat and that will save you some headache, time and additional gallons of paint! You can also paint furniture! Chalk paint is the perfect solution! Sand down that piece of furniture and grab a brush/paint roller and can of your favorite color or grab a can of spray paint and give some new life to a piece you already own! I’ve been loving rustoleum spray paint these days! Head to Amazon and order new drawer pulls and knobs. There are so many projects you can do with little to no money! You can spray paint so many things around your house to give them new life such as your old knobs/pulls, a curtain rod that has seen better days or an old vase. Look on Pinterest and Instagram and get that inspiration for your next project and be fearless!
One of my favorite backyard DIY projects involves My next DIY project involves these half barrels! The Planter Posts with String lights transforms our back yard!
Much love and hope as the weather warms up and we get to those home DIY projects!
