Closet Design Layout: The Key to Configuration

The best closet design layout makes your space feel organized and allows you to clear your head from all of the clutter. Sometimes this is best left to the professionals and is why I let EastClosets create my initial custom closet layout using their design tool and expertise!

I have to admit, a custom closet might be every woman's dream! You can checkout my Pinterest folder titled "closet goals" to see what my closet dreams are made of! EasyClosets fulfilled my closet goals checklist! I am in desperate need of stability for the amount of clothes I have to hang and organization for all of my belongings.

I did a significant amount of research on the right closet system and fell in love with EasyClosets! Having a custom closet on a budget is just what I needed. An upgraded closet was not at the top of my to do list for our new home, but I'm thankful that I made the change when I did.

EasyClosets has so many options to choose from. I love that I use every inch of my space. Not only is this a custom closet, but it is a DIY closet and that significantly cut costs! This post is all about my experience with purchasing and installing my East Closet system and how to create the optimal closet design layout.

1. The Before - Builder Grade Wire Closet System

When Steven and I were looking at homes, I saw potential in my closet. Our home has his and her closets and we knew this would be the perfect set up for us. I had a closet upgrade on my to do list, but it certainly wasn't at the top of the list. Cue the higher powers!

As soon as I unpacked and placed all of my dresses on this one long rack, the rack came crashing down! See the rack in question below, albeit with a temporary fix! For the type of home we are in, I am surprised that the master bedroom has wire closet shelving. But alas, it did and it could not hold what I placed on it! What you see below is only a portion of what I had on it.

I created a temporary fix, but left the majority of my closet in shambles as I moved my closet renovation up on my priority list. Here are some other before photos of my closet

When I was researching all of the closet companies, I analyzed what my needs were. This will be your first step. Looking at my before photos, you can see that I needed designated zones, drawers, a spot for jewelry and a place for shoes. Once I knew exactly what I needed in my closet design layout, I could go into contacting Easy Closets and telling my personal designer what I needed from my space.

2. Take Measurements of your Closet

Next up was taking measurements. The old adage of measure twice cut once is key! There's no cutting, but the measuring portion is crucial. My biggest take away is making sure to measure exactly where shelves will be placed and go from the wall out about 12 inches to make sure the wall doesn't bow out or in.

EasyClosets has a great customer service, but each closet is custom made for you, and having a piece that is the incorrect size will delay your installation. I had one of my walls that bowed out, so when I took quick measurements and didn't measure the width against the wall as well as out about 12 inches, I had a problem! I had to reorder 2 shelves.

3. Closet Design Time

This is the fun part! You'll enter your information and measurements into the EasyClosets website and a closet designer will take your measurements and put it into a 3D closet rendering! You can get as many edits as needed until it's perfect! I had a few changes that I requested once I was able to visualize the space. The 3D layout is an amazing tool.

We determined the current layout was the optimal layout, but my designer was able to add 2 sections of drawers and an entire shoe rack that would fit my belongings. I loved what he proposed, however upon further analyzation of my clothing, I moved a few sections around and played with the number and size of the drawers! This is my final closet design layout!

You have tons and tons of options to choose from to truly customize your closet. There are multiple colors for the closet system, multiple drawer and door fronts, soft close drawer and door options, different handle and finish options, numerous accessories to choose from like laundry baskets, jewelry organizers and valet pulls, and the list goes on! It's truly customizable and one of a kind!

Once you have your closet design set up and all of your options selected, hit purchase and your closet will be on your way to you shortly! Fair warning, there are A LOT of boxes headed your way!

4. Clear Out and Purge

Once your order is placed and you get a potential delivery date, it's time to clear out your closet and purge items you don't want to put back in your newly cleaned and organized space! This was a bit of work, but the reward was a clean slate!

Now is the time to fill holes and give your closet a good cleaning!

5. Complete a Full Inventory

Hooray, your EasyClosets custom closet has arrived! Now the fun begins! You've already received a copy of the installation instructions and supply list and can begin to open up your boxes. There will likely be quite a few boxes that arrive at your doorstep!

It's important that you go through each one and assess what has arrived for any damage. I did have a few pieces that arrived with dents, so I had to contact support and put in an order for duplicates. This was an easy process and can be done on their website or via email!

Bella enjoyed helping me complete inventory and getting all of the pieces out of the boxes!

6. EasyClosets Installation Day!

I was able to complete my installation in 1 day. The hardest part is the beginning. Installation of the rail is the most important piece to your new closet. You need to make sure that you install the rails level. Make sure that if you have installation on 2 different walls that will connect, that you are installing the rails at the same height. Once you measure everything out and drawer your lines, it goes pretty quickly! Don't take short cuts! Bella made sure to supervise me on this step!

7. Enjoy your new Custom DIY Closet!

EasyClosets made this easy! It's in the name! The process of installing the closet is simple! Think Ikea furniture with better directions! The uprights sit on the rail and then you just put the tops and anchoring shelves in and tighten the screws! Next you attach the system to the wall. After that it's really just figuring out the spacing of your shelves! I loved that the drawers came already put together! Although, you do need to attach the drawer fronts. I did the entire installation by myself without help!

The end product is phenomenal! I'm in love with my closet and know you will love yours too! I love that they have sales throughout the year. Hint hint wink wink! My EasyClosets custom DIY closet system cost around $2500 and then I used a coupon! That is far better than other systems that I researched and considered! My closet design layout is everything I wanted. I can move through my closet without bumping into clothes and hangers and it works perfectly for me!

My supervisors give it 2 thumbs up! Bella (the smaller cat) is not a jumper and is always so curious on how her sister gets up to high places! My closet is also Bella's safe place. It's where she goes if she's scared and if there are strangers in our house that she doesn't like! It's adorable!
